About Ideal Weight
What is Ideal Weight?
Ideal weight is a range of weights that are considered healthy for a given height. It’s not a single number but rather a range that takes into account individual variations in body composition.
Different formulas provide slightly different results, which is why we offer multiple calculation methods.
BMI Classification
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a common screening tool for weight categories:
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9
- Obesity: BMI 30 or greater
Calculation Methods
Devine Formula: Developed for medical dosage calculations. One of the most commonly used formulas.
Hamwi Formula: Originally developed for diabetes management. Similar to Devine but with slightly different constants.
Robinson Formula: Modification of the Devine formula, considered by some to be more accurate.
Miller Formula: The most recent formula, with values falling between Devine and Hamwi results.
Limitations
While these formulas provide useful estimates, they have limitations:
- Don’t account for muscle mass vs. fat mass
- Don’t consider body composition differences
- May not be accurate for athletes with high muscle mass
- Don’t account for ethnic differences in body composition
- Should be used as guidelines rather than absolute targets
